Germs Attack
They are all around us, changing shape and getting stronger all the time. Yes, its germs that are the focus of this article. Not visible to the naked eyes but ever present inspite of our best efforts to rid our homes of them. Germs need very little encouragement to survive and indeed thrive.
The conditions that help them proliferate are always there in some part of our house at any point in time. Frequently, cases of flu, diarrhea and other food borne diseases are caught at home because of less than satisfactory sanitary conditions or sometimes even when we clean our homes with diligence. Disinfectants and sanitation products help, but more than these it is information about how and where these germs thrive is what prepare us to combat them.Household articles of daily use like the sponge used for cleaning will invariably carry germs as their usage revolves around removing dust, dirt etc. A kitchen sponge, for example, may even carry E.Coli bacteria.
The sponge should be kept dry between use with no organic matter on it and replaced every week ideally.Rags used for cleaning up the kitchen surface and appliances like the refrigerator body and the food processor can pick up the germs from one surface and deposit it on another. Thus, even if a surface appears clean, there is a good chance that there are germs lurking there. The refrigerator handle and the water faucet are good examples in case and both potential carriers of disease causing germs.
Simple periodic disinfecting of the rag and keeping it dry between uses should keep the rag bacteria-free. It should also not come as a surprise that the chopping board in the kitchen figures quite high on the list of germ carriers. An unclean chopping board can even lead to salmonella poisoning. If a board is used for cutting, chopping fish or poultry it should be properly washed and the crevices on its surface cleaned before using it for vegetables. The cleaning can be done with the aid of a good disinfectant and hot water.
It is also not a bad idea to have two separate cutting boards. Moisture and organic matter found in the kitchen make it the prime place for germs and bacteria to thrive. The kitchen sink actually carries more bacteria than the toilet. It needs to be scrubbed clean everyday with a brush to remove accumulating deposits of any kind.
If we move on to the bathroom, from the kitchen, we find that bacteria activity is slightly reduced as compared to the kitchen mainly because people often use anti bacterial agents in their bathrooms and toilets.Something as innocuous as a toothbrush too can harbor germs that may linger, if food particles are not removed after use. In fact it is a good idea to change toothbrush every three months. In essence, prevention and protection are to be the watchwords if we are going to successfully challenge the germs in our daily battle against them. However, this should not mean going on a disinfecting spree as we would then be destroying a lot of friendly bacteria as well, for example the ones that help us curdle milk to get yogurt.
It’s a good idea to always have separate cleaning agents for different purposes instead of going for a multipurpose cleaner. One should buy them from a single trusted brand, preferably one that does not use too many harsh chemicals and at the same time, the cleaning agents are concentrated enough for a small amount to do the job efficiently.
