Hair Care for Men

for men has for some reason always been seen as a little “un – macho” for reasons no one clearly understood. It did not matter that women had to put up with poorly groomed men who considered any grooming that went beyond the basic shaving and brushing a sissy thing to do. However, of late there has been a noticeable change in the attitude of men towards the finer points of grooming that includes hair care and skin care, helped in no small measure by the fact that women are now more independent financially and expect their men to look good. So, finally whether by choice or not, today’s man is waking up to the range of options that are available to him for sprucing up his appearance.

Funnily enough, given that men spend more time outdoors in the sun, do more physical activity than women and sweat a lot, they really do need to take care of their hair and skin.Hair care products for men are the same as those for women, only the range is somewhat limited. This is actually a good thing as you can, after a little experimenting; easily identify a good product and then stay with it.Hair styling aids for men include pomades and brilliantines that are particularly useful for nourishing curly hair with oil, lubricating it and giving it a sheen.Men with curly hair sometimes will have dry and unevenly lubricated hair as the thick curls prevent even distribution of sebum, the natural oil that coats the hair.

Alcohol based lotions are not really recommended as the alcohol on evaporating dries and irritates the scalp. Gels are the most popular option with men. They are useful for reducing static in hair, keeping it untangled and lubricated. If the gels contain some holding agents, they can also be used for styling hair. As most gels are water based, they are quite safe and the risk of an allergic reaction is reduced. Brushing hair for men is important as it stimulates circulation of blood in the scalp and aids in the distribution of natural hair oil, i.e. sebum.Depending on hair thickness and hair length and type, differently tufted brushes are available for men that can be chosen. For example, if you have thinning hair, you need to go for a brush with softer boar bristles whereas for thick hair that tangles easily, a brush with nylon bristles is recommended.

Wide toothed combs with rounded ends are desirable and it’s a good thought to keep a pocket comb with you. Shaving brushes should ideally have the right blend between softness, to not irritate facial skin, and resistance, to work up a good lather.Avoid shaving creams that use chemicals like benzocaine that will plug the pores on the skin and prevent it from breathing. Use warm water before shaving to open up the pores and soften the beard. It’s a good thing to apply some cleanser to the face before applying the shave cream. The cream should be applied in thin even layers, too much cream will cause the razor to skip and give an uneven shave. Shave in the direction of the hair growth. The razor should be replaced after every three or four shaves.

Excessive pressure or a worn razor can cause the layers of facial skin to peel leading to an unpleasant burning sensation that gets exacerbated on applying the after-shave.
