Scent of a Woman (or a Man)
The hint of a fragrance can unlock long forgotten memories or help create new ones. Such is the power of our sense of smell and the right perfume. The way you smell speaks volumes about how you treat yourself. The scent within an arm’s length around you is your very own personal and intimate smell. Only those who step into this circle will be aware of it. So when people step into your scent circle do they get ready to flee or do they want to stay close?
Today, your perfume is an extension of your personality and helps communicate to others your mood and the way you feel about yourself. Ironically the fragrance you wear is not only an expression of yourself and your state of mind, but can actually influence your mood and the way you feel about yourself. The limbic system, one of the most primitive parts of the brain and is associated with our basic emotions and is influenced by external scents and smells. How well do you know your fragrance? Here is a short guide to help you select:
· Perfume or Parfum is the most concentrated and has more essential oils and less alcohol and so it lasts longer.
· Eau De Toilette is a little less concentrated than Perfume and is more popular.
· Cologne is lighter than Perfume and Eau De Toilette and is used to describe a fragrance that contains a citrus, light, cool and crisp scent.
· After Shave is lighter than cologne and is used to cool and smooth the skin after shaving for men.
· After Shave Balm is an emulsion-type of lotion to provide scent and moisture to the skin after shaving.
When you are shopping for a perfume preferably do it alone so that you are not influenced by your companion and do it when you have time on your hands. Don’t choose a cologne or perfume just because it smelt good on a friend since a perfume may smell different on you than it did then because the scent you give out is unique to you, it is the reaction of the fragrance to your skin and natural oils that it creates. A fragrance should never be smelt from the bottle, it should be applied on the skin at a pulse point; where the blood is the closest to the skin giving out more heat and therefore more fragrance.
Pulse points are located at the wrist, behind the ear, the breasts, crook of the arm and knee, the lower neck and ankles. Once applied don’t rub the perfume as it damages the molecules and notes of the fragrance. Do not smell more than three fragrances at a time. Give your nose a break or else you may end with a scent quite different from what you thought you were buying. When you opt for a fragrance choose one that suits the occasion and your personality. Use only the right amount of perfume, in excess even the best scent will reek. Try spraying a little on your hair while drying or on your hairbrush.
When spraying on your clothes hold the bottle at least 20 cm from the body and avoid spraying on furs and light fabrics. You can also try adding a few drops to the water of your steam iron, this will delicately scent your ironed clothes. If you have a dry skin then it will absorb more of the fragrance and hence you will need to apply it more often. Try not to use a body product that has a different fragrance from your perfume or Eau de Toilette, instead use a bath and body product that doesn’t have a strong aroma or use one that is similar to the fragrance you will wear. For men an all purpose lotion that can be used as a cologne, aftershave or a body rub is also a good option.
Body Odor or BO as it is popularly known now is one of the main reasons that a lot of people wear a fragrance. Despite popular belief sweat is not the cause for this odor. In fact sweat is of two kinds, eccrine and apocrine, neither of which has an odor. While eccrine is found all over the body, apocrine is limited to the underarms and the groin areas. The easily detected sweaty smell is caused when apocrine reacts with the bacteria on the skin. The best way to deal with BO is to take care of the bacteria with an antiseptic soap or body wash. Laundering clothes often and using a deodorant with Aluminium or zinc also helps; as does applying witch hazel to the offending areas. An antiperspirant deostick will also help with the wetness and odor.
