Brushing your Hair

In many a romantic movie the heroine has sat at her dressing table brushing her hair sighing as she looks up at the moon and recollects the special memories that the day has brought her. Not only does this free the hair of dust, tangles and dead cells on the scalp but it also gives the scalp the much needed stimulation. However using the wrong brush or comb with the wrong technique can do more harm than good. The best brush to get the job done right is one that has bristles with rounded tip that are less likely to scratch the scalp or tear hair strands. Boar bristles are known to distribute hair oils and proteins to give your tresses an over all healthy sheen. While nylon ones gently exfoliate the scalp. The key to good brushing is to direct your strokes from the nape of the neck to the crown of the head. Do not apply too much pressure or stroke vigorously as neither of these will do more harm than good.

You can choose a hairbrush that suits your hair, its needs and the manner in which you dry and style it. It is a good idea to have more than one hairbrush to serve different purposes.

Keep the following guidelines in mind while making your choice:

  • As far as possible do not brush your hair when it is wet as it is at its most vulnerable at this time and is prone to breaking. However if you must brush it or detangle your hair after a wash use a brush that has twin level tufts of bristles that allow them to glide through your hair.

  • For straight, short and fine hair use a brush with gentle nylon bristles that will not stretch or break the hair.

  • For drying your hair use a round brush that has a metallic body liner at the core that reflects heat back to the hair thereby reducing the amount of time that the hair dryer requires to be used. A round brush is ideal for styling the hair as is one with boar bristles which assist in nourishing the hair while untangling and brushing them.

  • The soft nylon bristles of a brush makes styling and shaping of the hair easier.

  • For very fine and thin hair select a brush with extra soft and fine boar bristles that will protect the scalp and hair whilst spreading the vital natural hair proteins and oils.

  • When crafted in durable and beautiful wood such as Beech a regal heirloom quality is added to your hairbrush. Choose in this style a brush that suits the hair for instance for long, curly and thick hair look for a brush with boar bristles where the tufts that are well spaced.

  • A shampoo brush massages your scalp and at the same time leaves it tangle-free.

  • Always remember to use a comb and brush cleaner regularly to keep these hair tools clean and hygienic. To avoid scalp infections don’t share your brush.
