SHAMPOO & CONDITIONERS

Like other parts of the body, your hair requires regular cleaning and moisturizing to keep it looking great. How often you shampoo your hair depends on hair type and activity level. Straight hair needs daily shampooing and conditioning to maintain a sleek, radiant look. Curly hair can be very dry so it is best to wash and condition every other day. At minimum, hair should be washed at least once a week to keep it healthy and clean.

Conditioning hair after shampooing is very important. Environmental pollutants, chemical processes such as coloring and perming, hormonal problems, and sun exposure can cause split ends, dryness, limpness, and plain old unmanageable hair. To add bounce to limp hair, use a body building conditioner. This conditioner adds bulk to limp hair by leaving some conditioner on the hair shaft. Dry, damaged hair may benefit from a protein-rich deep conditioner. Apply and leave on a deep conditioner between 10-20 minutes. This extra time allows the protein to repair damage and restore moisture.

Dry, stressed, or color treated hair needs a shampoo that will gently clean and restore moisture and shine. Try using a shampoo with green tea extract for shine and echinacea and shea butter for gentle cleaning. Follow up with a moisturizing conditioner that also has soothing green tea and shea butter to restore the hair's natural moisture balance.

Fine or thinning hair requires a shampoo that will create fuller looking tresses. Choose a thickening shampoo with panthenol. Panthenol is an ingredient used in shampoos that coats the hair shaft and increases its thickness. A thickening shampoo should also contain ingredients such as wheat protein to prevent breakage and silk protein and witch hazel extracts to add resiliency and moisture to delicate fine or thinning hair.

Oily hair is caused by overactive sebaceous glands located next to the hair follicle. Despite frequent washing, the hair looks greasy and unwashed. Oily and greasy heads need products that clean without stripping hair of its natural oils. However, many products formulated for such hair contain harsh chemicals that strip hair of oils. This results in a vicious cycle of the sebaceous glands producing more oil to compensate for that lost due to harsh cleaning products. To combat this problem, choose a gentle cleansing shampoo with rosemary and pansy, two good extracts that work on oily or greasy hair, and vitamins A and E to maintain a healthy hair and scalp.

People with normal hair, not too oily or too dry, may appreciate the convenience of a one-step shampoo/conditioner hair product. This combination product is pH balanced and gentle enough for daily use. A shampoo/conditioner combo is also a favorite for active people who work out at the gym and for travelers looking to lighten their suitcase load.

For households looking to save money and cabinet space, there are shampoos that work for all hair types. Look for one that is pH balanced and has ingredients that will restore body and shine along with a conditioner that detangles and moisturizes hair.

Whatever your hair type, look for a shampoo that will gently clean without stripping hair of its natural oils and a conditioner that moisturizes to leave hair soft and manageable. Choose products with a pleasant fragrance to leave your hair not only clean but smelling great. Whether you prefer a hint of vanilla or an invigorating cucumber/melon scent, there are shampoos and conditioners that will leave your hair clean, healthy, and refreshed.
