Is Stress Effecting Your Health?

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change.
Courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.
--The Serenity Prayer

While the word stress usually brings with it unhappy connotations, the fact is that to some extent we all thrive on stress. Change is the very essence of life and without it life would be rather dull. And with change comes the stress that the body feels. To an extent stress is good for you as it heightens awareness and keeps the individual focused. However it is when the stress is for a long time or is frequent that problems arise. The physical reactions of fight or flight’ that a stressor initiates were designed to save us in the days of the cave man. However today when you are in stressful situation with your boss or your partner then as much as the idea may sound appealing at the moment, running away is not an option nor is fighting. Thus the physiological reactions that are started as a way to protect you have to be curbed in the body. These reactions include the release of hormones such as adrenaline into the blood which lead to rise in pulse and heart rate, increased sensory awareness. Prolonged stress and its resulting reactions lead to problems such as ulcers, asthma, coronary heart disease, lowered immune system leaving the body vulnerable to infections.

Apart from adopting relaxation techniques such as meditation and de-stressing activities such as a physical sport to work out the pent up energy, eating a healthy diet and changing your attitude towards a stressful situation as the Serenity Prayer suggests it would be wise to add a nutritional supplement to ensure that your body is in top condition to handle any and every kind of stress in the most efficient manner.

The nutrients that such a supplement should be rich in includes:

  • Vitamin C is crucial for overall body functioning. It helps in the healing of wounds and broken bones and also in the production of hemoglobin and red blood cell production in the bone marrow. A powerful antioxidant, it is found to build up the body’s resistance to colds and other viral infections.

  • itamin B1 or Thiamine is known to maintain normal functioning of the nervous and muscular systems, and also keeps the mucous membranes healthy.

  • A good anti-oxidant Vitamin B2 promotes normal growth and development and specifically helps in the healing of burns, wounds and stomach ailments.

  • Niacin keeps the skin, nerves and digestive system working properly. It also helps improve digestion and protects the body from toxins and pollutants.

  • Vitamin B6 aids in stress relief and assists in energy production. It helps the brain function normally and maintains balance in the body fluids.

  • Found only in animal products and in fish vitamin B12 improves the body’s immunity and helps prevent mental and nervous disorders.

  • Other vitamins that should feature in your supplement include folic acid, Biotin and pantothenic acid.

  • Amongst the minerals calcium is critical to the m aintenance of normal heartbeat, nerve and muscle function and blood clotting. While your daily iron intake is vital to the production of hemoglobin and of ATP without which cellular fuel cannot be synthesized leaving the body feeling fatigued.

  • Zinc and magnesium are also important to keep up the immunity and health of the body.
