WINTER PROOF YOUR HAIR
Is Old Man Winter playing tricks with your hair and does it seem that bad hair days are a thing of the past, now your tresses have graduated to bad hair weeks. Well, its time to take charge and get back control over your hair. However before you do that you need to understand how this season of white effects your hair. With the fall in the mercury and the cold dry air your hair is vulnerable to having its nourishing moisture stripped. And to add to that indoor heating and static from your woolens make matters worse.
Your hair cleansing and moisturizing rituals are especially important in this season as is proper massaging of the scalp that promotes circulation. Keep the following guidelines in mind while caring for your hair this winter :
-
Using a hairbrush with natural boar bristles will ensure that the natural proteins and oils are evenly spread through your hair leaving it with a healthy sheen.
-
Wash your hair no more than twice a week. Remember that your hair needs more moisture so try using a shampoo that cleans and moisturizes your hair in one go. Choose a shampoo that is pH balanced and thus gentle on your tresses.
-
If you have a dry scalp, gently brush your scalp to stimulate it and dislodge any dead skin cells. Massage in a table spoon of olive oil with a drop of lavender and rosemary essential oils and leave it for an hour before shampooing it.
-
For hair that is thin and goes limp in this season use a shampoo that is enriched with wheat and silk protein that add elasticity to the strands and makes them stronger and healthier. Panthenol is another ingredient that you should be looking for in your shampoo as it helps increase hair shaft thickness.
-
As far as possible air dry your hair. Due to the weather conditions your hair is all ready low on its naturals moisture and using hot air on it will only make matters worse. If however you need to use a hair dryer to dry and style your hair then use a brush that has a metallic core that reflects back the heat from the dryer. Thus quickening the drying process.
-
Ill fitting hats can overwork your sebaceous glands leading to limp and greasy hair. To avoid this buy hats that fit well and dry clean them regularly.
-
Though brushing is important to circulation in the scalp, over brushing can wear off the outer cuticle of your hair strands and also over stimulate the oil glands. Ten to twenty strokes with a good hairbrush with natural boar bristles is recommended.
-
Consider reducing highlighting your hair in this season. Bleaching dries out the hair and that is something you do not want to do in this cold and dry season.
-
Drinking plenty of water to keep your body from getting dehydrated. Even if you don’t feel thirsty keep in mind that the central heating deprives you slowly of moisture, dehydrating you slowly but surely.
-
You also need to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables that provide the essential vitamins and minerals. Proteins and certain fats vital to healthy skin and hair are found in foods such as oily fish like sardines, chicken, cereals and vegetable oils. It is a good idea to take a nutritional supplement that ensures that your body gets all the required nutrients on a daily basis.
