The Importance of Using a Good Mold Disinfectant

Until molds make us sick, or we notice that something in our refrigerator or cupboard has grown a layer of green fuzz, we don’t always pay attention to these organisms. Mold spores are living fungi that exist all around us. These spores can grow in our houses, often unseen, when the conditions are right for their survival. To protect our health by keeping molds under control in our environment, we should have a good mold disinfectant on hand.

Mold spreads by sending out tiny spores that the air carries everywhere. The spores are invisible to the naked eye. When they land on a spot where they can be warm, damp, and can find food, they grow and send out more spores. Many common materials in our homes are good places for them to live, for instance, clothing, carpet, wallpaper, ceiling tiles, dust, and books. Mold can flourish and spread with the right temperature and humidity, unless the surface is treated by a mold disinfectant.

Not everyone is sensitive to mold or experiences symptoms when exposed to it, just as not everyone is allergic to airborne pollen during the spring and summer, or to animal dander. Even if a person is not allergic to molds, it still can be unhealthy to breathe mold. Some possible ill-effects are runny nose, itching or burning eyes, cough, asthma, or other respiratory problems. Go online or contact your local health department to request how to get rid of mold in a house. This free information will help you combat the problem.

Make an Action Plan

Often it is not possible to see mold. You may first notice a damp, musty, or mildew-like odor in a room or particular area of your home, such as a bathroom or basement. Learn more about detecting mold from brochures such as “Get rid of mold in my house,” free information available from your county extension agency. Mold often grows after you’ve experienced a water problem in your home. Even something like an overflowing toilet or leaky washing machine can produce the constant moisture necessary for mold spores. Since mold grows fast and can invade at anytime, you should have a mold disinfectant available (#12 Stanley Germ-trol II). In possible problem areas, also use a humidifier.

To eradicate mold when you find it in your house, since you don’t’ want it to be a permanent houseguest, carefully read over your “Get rid of mold in my house,” free information. It’s important that you remove every sign of mold; otherwise, it will just keep spreading.

Before you attack the mold or handle any chemicals, be sure to protect yourself from breathing in the spores or making skin contact. Gather and use eye goggles, a mask to cover your nose and mouth, and rubber or latex gloves. Your clothing should washable, since you will need to wash them in the washer and dryer as soon as you’ve finished your mold disinfectant project.

If your home has many of the conditions that make it extra susceptible to mold, vacuum carpets and clean hard-surfaced floors regularly. Be especially vigilant in damp areas. Any time you have a leak, repair the problem that caused it right away. Use a mold disinfectant regularly to prevent a re-infection of this common problem.

Special care in Bathrooms

Bathrooms are ideal places for mold to grow because these rooms are damp, usually kept in the ideal temperature range, and contain materials that will nourish mold. Regular use of a mold disinfectant is a good idea (#6 Germ-X II Spray Disinfectant). One way to keep track of what chores are necessary is to create a bathroom cleaning check sheet to ensure that you don’t miss any possible mold-growing places. Include such things as:

• Scrub or machine-wash the shower curtain with mold disinfectant
• Frequently wash all towels, bath mats, and area rugs
• Thoroughly clean sinks, tubs, showers, and toilets. If your bathroom is carpeted, vacuum them thoroughly and spray with a disinfectant
• Wash uncarpeted flooring

When you work with your bathroom cleaning check sheet each time, you won’t accidentally forget a critical chore.

If you have mold on your deck, home siding, or roof, you can protect your investment by using a pressure washing product along with a pressure washer to remove these stains. (Germ-Trol II) Your home will look better, and the materials will last longer

Mold is something you definitely don’t want to live with. A little diligence and good cleaning habits will help prevent this annoying problem. Educate yourself with informative literature such as “Get rid of mold in my house,” free information. Also, don’t forget to create and use a bathroom cleaning check sheet.
