How
to Pack Light while Traveling with Toddlers
Whether you’re packing to go for a walk to the park or you
are planning a trip across country, traveling with toddlers presents
a problem in logistics. “How to pack light traveling with
toddlers?” is a question asked by all parents of children
in this age group. A toddler is much more difficult to pack for
than an infant. Toddlers need stimulation in the form of toys and
snacks, not to mention the clothes and equipment. Toddlers require
almost constant attention, and need supervision almost all the
time.
So how do you decide how to pack light traveling with toddlers,
and what do you need to pack? The answer depends largely on where
you are going, how long you will be gone, and how you are getting
there. Whatever your answers to those questions, you will need
to consider what you might need for any number of possible situations.
If you travel with kids, things to keep on hand all the time include
diapers, spare clothes, and items to help clean up any type of
mess (Stanley Hand Sanitizer Wipes).
It is often not a matter of how to pack light when traveling with
toddlers; it is more a question of how to pack effectively. You
have to plan for the unexpected. Anything can happen when you travel
with kids. Remember when planning for your trip that you can’t
predict everything - it is better to prepared for anything. Start
planning and preparing early; don’t leave planning to the
last minute. Write yourself a “what to pack travel checklist” and
cross of the items as you get them. Put those items together in
a designated area, ready for packing. That way, you won’t
misplace them and have to rush to replace those items at the last
minute.
Before you start packing, consider the container you will be using.
When you travel with kids, one caution to keep in mind is “the
mess factor.” You are better off using a bag for your toddler
that is waterproof and easily cleaned. This bag can be reorganized
and refurbished regularly, and be ready to grab at a moment’s
notice whenever you go out the door with your toddler.
Your “what to pack travel checklist” should consist
of at least the following;
• Diapers – required, with extras in case of emergencies
• Blankets – you should take at least two blankets for your toddler.
The blanket weight will depend on the climate in your area.
• Plastic bags/ zip lock bags – for storing diapers, fresh and soiled
clothes, snacks, and trash. Extras will help keep your bag organized. Do not
use plastic bags that are large enough to fit around your child’s head.
These can be dangerous.
• Tissues/ wipes - (Stanley Degreaser Wipes) essential when you travel
with kids. Keep these handy.
• Sanitizer wipes – (Stanley Hand Sanitizer Wipes) These are the
best option for cleaning up any mess when it comes to your kids.
• Toys/ books – to keep your toddler entertained; long trips can
be very hard on children, so be sure to bring several items for them to play
with.
• Clothes – enough for two changes a day. You never know what accidents
or spills will happen, so take at least a change of clothes on the plane, boat,
or in the car.
• Sun hat – a sunburned toddler is not going to be fun on a long
trip.
• Juice boxes, sipping cup – something that won’t spill. Be
sure to keep your little one’s hydration levels up when traveling.
• Food – snacks for the trip
• Laundry soap/ pre-laundry stain stick – This could be a lifesaver
for removing nasty stains while away from home. (Stanley Orange Miracle Pre-Wash
Stain Treatment)
• Car seat – this is essential for travel by car or plane.
• Stroller – another item that will help you enjoy your time. You
won’t be worried about having to carry your toddler or about them having
to walk long distances.
These are essential items you need to have on your “what
to pack” travel checklist to ensure you are able to enjoy
your trip. Some other items that you need to think about when considering
how to pack light when travelling with toddlers are items that
will help you as a parent. These include changes of clothes for
you in case of travel emergencies, snacks and drink for you, separate
bags for you and your toddler, something to read, and your camera.
These items will make it easier for you to relax and enjoy the
trip.
Your “what to pack” travel checklist is a guide for
remembering general considerations when you travel with kids. Other
things to keep in mind are any specific requirements your kids
may have, including medicine, nightlights, specialty foods, allergy
medicines or cream, comforters, favorite toys or teddy bears. All
of these items will make your trip run more smoothly and ensure
your toddler will have everything he/she needs.
